The Stetson baseball program was recognized this week by the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball (NACSB) as one of the most valuable programs in the nation.

Stetson tied for eighth in the rankings, which were built around the participation of a program’s players in the organization’s 10 summer league programs. The Hatters had 15 players compete in various summer leagues this year, including a trio that played in the prestigious Cape League in Massachusetts.

Stetson received 30 points in the standings, tied with Indiana University of eighth place. Georgia Tech took top honors with 40 points followed by Maryland (36), Florida Atlantic (35), Seton Hall (34), Wake Forest (34), Seminole State (33) and Vanderbilt (31).

Stetson senior pitchers Kurt Schluter and Joe Dye were joined in the Cape League by junior hurler Cameron Griffin.

The unofficial start to the 2013 season for the Stetson baseball program will be held on Monday, Feb. 4, at the Dick Westervelt First Pitch Banquet in the Stetson Room at the Carlton Union Building on campus. The evening will include a social hour, dinner and awards presentations from the 2012 season.

The Hatters will open the 2013 season on Friday, February 15, against Saint Joseph’s at 6:30 p.m. Stetson will play another home heavy slate again this spring with 38 home game at Melching Field, including 19 of the first 20 games of the year.
