Between Jan. 21 and Feb. 1, GoHatters.com is counting down the Top 10 Games in Patricia Wilson Field history...

Countdown #7
April 24, 2010, Home game #325
Stetson 7, Kennesaw State 3 (8 innings)

In a key late-season Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader, Stetson and Kennesaw State entered the day in a virtual tie for second place.  Both teams were looking to sew up a berth in the conference tournament, which would be a milestone for the Owls as they were in their first season eligible to play in the postseason.

The pitching match-up featured Jessica Cross for the Owls and Amanda Lindsey for the Hatters, and Stetson struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning.  A couple of Hatter errors in the third inning allowed Kennesaw to jump in front 2-1, but Stetson executed a two-out first-and-third “double steal” to tie the score 2-2 in the bottom of the third.

Both pitchers settled down in the middle innings and the Owls' defense cut down one runner at the plate to keep the score even through six.

KSU grabbed the lead in the top of the seventh when Sharon Swanson hit a two-out RBI single to center.  On the play, however, centerfielder Amy Joyce threw out the trailing runner at the plate in what turned out to be a game-saving play.

The Hatters rallied in the bottom of the seventh.  With Chelsea Whalley on third with two outs and Chelsey Trotto down to her last strike, the Hatter shortstop singled into right field to score Whalley with the tying run.

The Hatters had new life as the game moved into extra innings.  In the top of the eighth, Lindsey pitched out of a two-on, one-out situation, sending the Hatters to the plate with a chance to win.  An error, a single, and a sacrifice bunt put the Hatters in a great position with runners at second and third and only one out.  With junior Katelyn Perna due up and Lindsey on deck, Kennesaw State head coach Scott Whitlock called for an intentional walk to load the bases and set up a force play at home plate.

"I remember standing on deck watching them intentially walk K.P. thinking wow they have some guts," Lindsey recalls. "I even remember turning to someone and laughing. I'm pretty sure I had struck out my last at bat with people on base. I think they thought that since K.P. had been hitting and they had already gotten me out previously they could do it again. I remember thinking that I had to prove them wrong for myself and for my team. I don't ever remember anyone walking someone in front of me to pitch to me unless I was hitting behind Migs (Andrea Migliori)."

Lindsey had indeed been hitless on the day.  With the Owl infield pulled in, and the count 2-0, Cross needed to throw a strike, and Lindsey knew it.

"I remember after they threw the first ball I looked over into the dugout and the girls were really pumped and I could tell they had complete faith in me which made me believe in myself a lot more. I don't even remember where the pitch was or what it was but I think it was middle/outside because it looked beautiful when she let go of it. I swung and felt it off my bat, I knew it was gone. It was my first and only grand slam in college and it felt great to be able to do it for my team like that. It was awesome."

(We knew it was gone, too, as you will see on the video clip accompanying this story.  Please note the "woo-ing" is not from us, it is the crowd mic.)

Stetson went on to win game two 2-1 in 10 innings in another walk-off victory, clinching a spot in the A-Sun Tournament.

Amanda Lindsey’s walk-off grand slam is the only non-run-rule walk-off grand slam in Patricia Wilson Field history and the 7-3 Hatter win ranks as the #7 Top Game in Patricia Wilson Field history.
