The Stetson University women’s golf team will continue its spring schedule this weekend at the Morehead State Invitational, which will be played at the Juliette Falls Golf Resort in Ocala.

The Hatters will compete against a field of 13 other teams and enters the tournament as the defending champion. Stetson won the tournament by four shots over the host team from Morehead State last spring.

“We are the defending champions at this weeks tournament,” Hatters coach Floyd Kerr said. “If we continue to do the things that we are capable of, we can make a run for that title again this year. We are now at the point that, at any given time, any player can lead us through the tournament. We have realized that we depend and rely on one another.”

The event this weekend will start with practice rounds on Saturday. The tournament will start on Sunday with 18 holes of competition and will continue with single rounds on both Monday and Tuesday. The course at Juliette Falls will be set for a par of 72 covering 6,113 yards.

In addition to the Hatters and host Eagles, the tournament will include teams from the University of Akron, Ohio University, Western Kentucky, Mercer, Western Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Rutgers, McNeese State, Toledo, Appalachian State, Florida Gulf Coast and Daytona State.

The Hatters will be led into the tournament by junior Ryan Ashburn, who is coming off a 13th place finish last weekend at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational. That performance earned her the A-Sun Player of the Week honor.

“This team is now realizing that they are pretty good, they are more relaxed but still competitive,” Kerr said. “I have dubbed this team the fun bunch. We are enjoying each other as teammates which is always positive.”

Last year at the Morehead State event the Hatters had six players finish in the top 25. Returning juniors Mallory Viera (13th), Sammi Smith (t-17th), Claudia Redinger (t-23rd) and Ashburn (t-25th) all helped the Hatters bring home top honors from that event.
