Despite scoring a season-best eight goals, the Stetson lacrosse team (0-9) was defeated by Marist (2-7) by a score of 21-8 on Thursday evening at the Stetson Athletic Training Center.  Freshman Maylis Broderick scored three goals in the loss.

The Hatters opened the game with an unassisted score by Broderick just over one minute after the first whistle.  The Red Foxes quickly countered to tie the game 20 seconds later, and then took the lead for the first time with 23:29 to play in the first.

Stetson tied the game once again, at 2-2, when freshman Danielle Horgan scored unassisted with just over 23 minutes to play in the first.  After a 5-0 run by the Red Foxes, the Hatters found themselves in a 7-2 hole with 14:11 remaining in the period.

Two scores, one by Broderick and one by Horgan, got Stetson back into the game.  Horgan’s second came on a free position, and made it 7-4 in favor of Marist with 10:08 to play in the first.  The Red Foxes, however, ended the frame with a pair of goals to take a 9-4 lead into the break.

Marist then scored the first seven goals to start the second half, taking a 16-4 lead, and putting the Hatters in a difficult position.  Like fans have seen much of this season, Stetson didn’t give up.  The Hatters scored four out of the next nine goals to cut it to 21-8 by the final horn.

Freshman Mary Kate O’Sullivan, Broderick, sophomore Samantha Akl, and freshman Noelle Morabito each netted goals during the stretch.  Horgan assisted on O’Sullivan’s score, the only Stetson helper of the contest.

Marist outshot Stetson 36-15 in the game, and pulled in 24 draw controls to the Hatters’ seven.  Stetson, however, led the Red Foxes in ground balls, 13-12, and committed just 13 turnovers to Marist’s 14.

Horgan led the Hatters with three draw controls, while O’Sullivan and freshmen Elisabeth Blackwell and Hallie Plunkett led the way with two ground balls each.  Freshmen Rachel Dumas and Kelsey Gilbert each caused a team high two turnovers.

Freshmen Caili Guilday and Whitney Meyers split time in goal.  The former stopped one shot in just under 16 minutes, while the latter made five saves in just over 44 minutes of action.  Marist’s Ashley Casiano made five stops in the win.

Stetson will next head back on the road, playing at St. Mary’s on March 29 at 6:00 p.m. and at California on April 1 at 4:00 p.m.  The Hatters will then open Atlantic Sun Conference play at league-leading Jacksonville on April 6 at 3:00 p.m.
