The Stetson sand volleyball team swept its home opener on Tuesday, defeating Florida Atlantic twice by identical 5-0 scores at the Stetson Sand Volleyball courts.

The Hatters battled through unseasonably cool and windy conditions to improve to 7-4 on the season.

"Our early tournaments on the beach really served us well today," Stetson head coach Tim Loesch said. "There was a lot of wind, and the girls were able to adjust to it. It wasn't pretty, but they figured out a way to be successful in the wind and against a good team that improved today. FAU really challenged us in the second match, and our girls had to make some adjustments to be successful."

Stetson's top seed of Kaley Melville and Julie Bassett extended their win streak to six with 2-0 wins in both matches. They improved to 9-2 on the season.

The no. 2 pair of Savannah Byl and Maren Rygh also won 2-0 in each match.

"It was definitely difficult with the wind changing the direction of the ball," Rygh said. "We had to stay behind it and lead the ball where it was going to go and be ready for everything."

Katie DiGirolamo and Jordann Dierickx won their fifth match in a row, but had to battle from 11-3 and 19-16 deficits in game one (match one) to win 21-19.

"We were down 11-3, and it was some errors on our part, but we came together as a team and decided, 'Hey, we are not losing this game,' and came back and won it 21-19," Dierickx said.

The no. 4 pair of Erin Robertson and Erika White also faced some drama in match two, as their contest went deep into a third set before the Hatters pulled out a 19-17 victory.

"We had to keep fighting for every point," Robertson said. "We missed a lot of serves, back and forth, but we kept fighting, we didn't want to let any balls hit the ground, and we did good."

Catherine Coston and Alisha Hoffman also cruised to 2-0 victories at the no. 5 position as the Hatters made their home debut a successful one.

"I am just really happy that the team won their home opener," Loesch said. "The girls are obviously more comfortable playing here. We are on the road this weekend, but we are back home after that and I'm hoping we can get an even bigger crowd and defend our home court."

Stetson will play at the JU Easter Sand Tournament this Friday and Saturday against Jacksonville (two A-Sun matches), the College of Charleston, Florida State, and UAB.
