On Sunday, Claudia Radke of the Stetson Tri Club raced her first sprint triathlon. A sprint consists of swimming (750 meters) then biking (12.4 miles) and then running (3.1 miles). Being her first race Claudia was somewhat timid as she showed up for the swim on a very brisk morning as was the only racer without a wetsuit on. Although it was mid 60s out, Claudia pushed through the swim and finished under her goal time of 30 minutes. She did say she was comforted and immediately respected by the other athletes who were racing with as they saw her without a wetsuit braving the elements. After the swim she hopped onto her bike and went on her longest continuous ride to date (12.4 miles). The route was along some busier roads where normal rules of the road applied. The rolling hills of Ocala also surprised Claudia as shed mainly trained on flat roads throughout Florida. As she rolled into transition 2 to get ready for her run she was cheered on by her brother who was also racing and the race director who was cheering for athletes by name which was a really cool experience Claudia said. The run went well and Claudia crossed the finish line in just over 2 hrs. She finished 6th in her age group and a listing of the full event results can be found on the HITS site, Ocala Results.
This will be the first of about 4-5 races Claudia is hoping to complete before the tri season comes to a close. If you're interested in joining the tri club email firstname.lastname@example.org.
