SPARTANBURG, SC – The Stetson University men’s golf team struggled through the first day of play at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational on Monday.
The Hatters followed an opening round score of 300, which was the highest in the 16-team field, with a second round score of 308. Stetson enters Tuesday’s final round six shots behind Longwood for 15th place.
The tournament, which is the final tuneup event prior to the Atlantic Sun Conference championship tournament next week, is being played at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
The host Terriers from Wofford College lead the tournament with a two-round score of 557. Wofford followed an opening round score of 283 with a blistering 274 in the second round to build an eight shot lead over East Tennessee State in second place.
Stetson was led on Monday by sophomore Matt Taylor, who opened the tournament with a three-under par 69 in the first round, but slipped back with a second round score of 76. Taylor is tied for 27th in the tournament heading into final round play on Tuesday.
Taylor was the only member of the Stetson squad to rank in the top 60 in the tournament field.
The Hatters other players in the event are freshman Dustin Dingus (74-78=152), freshman Andrew Peterson (76-79=155), junior Tyler White (81-76=157) and freshman Michael Primavera (86-78=164).
