JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Stetson junior Sammi Smith tied for the low round of the day on Tuesday with a bogey-free two-under par round of 70 to lead the Hatters up two spots in the Atlantic Sun Women’s Golf Championship.
ETSU continues to lead the tournament, as the Bucs finished the second round at two-over-par to lead by 11 strokes over FGCU. Sian Evans shot two-over-par to drop back to +3 and sits in a three-way tie for first with teammate Gabriella Wahl and Jacksonville's Jessica Welch.
The Bucs (578) began Tuesday's second round with a six-stroke lead over Jacksonville and as the only team under par, but shot three-over on Tuesday to fall back to two over for the championship. Three Bucs occupy spots in the top six of the championship, led by Evans.
Defending champion Wahl fired a two-under-par 70 to move into the tie with Welch and Evans. Welch and Evans shared Monday's honor of tying the championship's low round with a 67. Bucs' freshman Vivienne Chin shot one-under-par 71 to tie for sixth.
Florida Gulf Coast (589) matched ETSU for the low team round of the day, shooting +3 and moving into second place. Three Eagles are in the championship's Top-10, led by Georgia Price's 73 to keep her at even par for the championship. Kristin Swindell shot even par to move up two spots and tie for sixth and Briana Carlson moved into the Top-10 with a two-under-par 70 to match Wahl.
Mercer sits in third alone (592), as Lacey Fears shot 71 to move up five spots into the Top-10 and a tie for eighth. Defending Champion Kennesaw State moved up behind Mercer, improving four strokes on yesterday to shoot 295 and occupy fourth place (594).
Stetson (600) was 10 strokes better than its opening round, moving up two spots to fifth place with its 295. The Hatters' Smith fired a 70, one of the five under par rounds of the championship. Mallory Viera followed her opening round score of 73 with a matching one-over par 73 on Tuesday. He is tied for eighth overall in the tournament at two over par 146.
Smith is also within range of a top 10 finish after her strong second round performance. She is tied for 12th at five over par 149.
Ryan Ashburn is also within range of a top 10 finish after posting a three-over par 75 in the second round. She is tied for 17th at seven-over par for the tournament.
Jenna Hoecker (77-77=154) is tied for 24th headed to the final day of play while Claudia Redinger (79-77=156) is tied for 33rd.
Jacksonville (601) fell from second to sixth with its 308, but Welch remains atop the leader board tied for first at (-3).
North Florida shot a 309 for a total of 609 and place seventh, followed by Lipscomb (625), USC Upstate (627) and Northern Kentucky (667).
Kennesaw State and Stetson will begin their rounds at 8 a.m. off hole number one, followed by ETSU, FGCU and Mercer beginning at 8:45 a.m. Beginning on hole number 10, Jacksonville and North Florida begin at 8 a.m., followed by Lipscomb, USC Upstate and Northern Kentucky beginning their starting times at 8:45.
