ORLANDO -- The Stetson University softball team took one of two games at the UCF Tournament, Saturday, thanks to a two run, one out rally in the seventh inning of Game 1.

The Hatters defeated UT Martin 2-1, with a walk-off bunt single from third baseman Brittany Hawn earlier in the day ‎before dropping the night cap, 6-5 to SIUE.

In the first game, senior pitcher Sarah Read cruised through seven innings, surrendering just three hits on one run and striking out five UT Martin batters as Stetson headed to the bottom of the seventh down 1-0.  With one out in the final frame, catcher Jessica Griffin singled down the left field line and advanced to second on a bunt single by first baseman Kayla Drury. Griffin was pitch ran for by freshman Lydia Kinney who came around to score on a Courtney Brandt RBI single to center to make it 1-1. Drury advanced to third on the game tying hit, setting the stage for Hawn, who with one out laid down the perfect bunt in front of Skyhawks pitcher Taylor Jerrick, allowing Drury to score and Hawn to be mobbed with congratulations from her teammates for her second career walk-off winner.

Reed was credited with the win and improved to 4-0 on the season. Stetson out hit UT Martin 7-3 as Brandt led the Hatters' offense with two hits and an RBI.

In the second game, Stetson dug itself in an early 5-0 hole to SIUE after committing three errors in the second inning, but surged back, plating two in the third and three in the fifth to tie the game up at 5-5, heading into the sixth.

Junior Taylor Cochran came into the game in the third, relieving starter Meredith Owen and pitched ‎well in her first appearance of the season, ‎surrendering a run on three hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work. That run would come in the top of the sixth after a double and a single by Cougar batters gave them back the lead at 6-5. The slim one run margin held up as Cougar pitching retired the Stetson offense in the bottom of the seventh, giving SIUE the victory.

Grimaldo and senior Chrissy Morello were the offensive stars for Stetson in the second game, both collecting a pair of hits as Griffin ‎was credited with 2 RBI. Despite her stellar relief appearance, Cochran was tagged with the loss and moved to 0-1 on the year.

Stetson is now 8-3 after a 2-2 trip to Orlando for the UCF Tournament. The Hatters next play March 7-8 as they take on Memphis and South Dakota in the Stetson Classic at Patricia Wilson Field.
