MACON, Ga. – Four members of the Stetson women’s basketball team were honored by the Atlantic Sun Conference with postseason awards on Monday, including Amber Porter (Woodbridge, Va.) who was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year, as announced by the league office.
For the second straight season, the Hatters placed three student-athletes on the Atlantic Sun all-conference teams, but 2013-14 marks the first time ever that Stetson landed three individuals on the All-Atlantic Sun First Team.
Senior forward Sasha Sims (Fayetteville, Ga.), junior guard Jama Sharp (Mooresville, Ind.), and Porter were three of the six players named to the league’s first team. Porter was also a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman Team and was joined by freshman guard Brianti Saunders (Hilliard, Fla.).
Sims, who was a second team honoree a year ago, leads the Hatters and is sixth in the A-Sun in scoring as a senior with 14.4 points per game. She has scored in double figures in 23 out of 30 games this year en route to earning A-Sun Player of the Week accolades three times. Sims is now second all-time in Stetson history with 1,555 points, needing only 16 more for the school record.
The league leader with 2.4 steals per game, Sharp also leads Stetson and is second in the A-Sun with 5.5 assists per contest. The guard is also fifth in the conference with a 39.5 three-point shooting percentage and is fourth in school history with 106 made from beyond the arc. Sharp has had four games this season of 10 assists.
Porter becomes just the second player in Stetson history to be named A-Sun Freshman of the Year after setting a new conference record by being named A-Sun Newcomer of the Week five times this season. The forward leads the conference and is fifth in the entire nation with 3.7 blocks per game. She also leads the league with a .552 field goal percentage, and ranks seventh in scoring (14.2) and sixth in rebounding (8.0).
A three-time A-Sun Newcomer of the Week in her own right, Saunders has recorded doubles figures in 22 out of 30 games as a freshman. The point guard is 10th in the A-Sun in scoring at 13.0 points per game, and is sixth with an .813 free throw percentage. Saunders was also named A-Sun Player of the Week back on Dec. 9 after posting the highest scoring output of the season for Stetson with 30 points against Florida A&M.
The no. 2 seed in the upcoming A-Sun Tournament, Stetson (24-6) will welcome seventh-seeded Kennesaw State (6-23) to the Edmunds Center for a quarterfinal contest Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
Note: Stetson's only other Freshman of the Year recipient was Josilyn Giles in 2002-03 ... CollegeSportsMadness selected Amber Porter as its choice for A-Sun Player of the Year and Lynn Bria as the A-Sun Coach of the Year.
