DeLAND—Kevin Ndahiro (Ottawa, Ontario) has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play basketball at Stetson University, head coach Corey Williams announced today.

A 6-9, 225-pound forward, Ndahiro is the fifth member of Williams’ first full Stetson recruiting class.

“Kevin is athletic and versatile,” said Williams. “He’s a power forward/center who can step out and shoot an occasional jumper, so he may be able to play some small forward for us as well. He still has some work to do, but he’s the type of player we need to recruit and sign in order to move this program forward.”

Ndahiro played his senior season at Thomas Nelson High School in Bardstown, Ky. He averaged 17.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as he helped the Generals to a 16-13 record and an appearance in the district finals. His best game of the season came against Bethlehem in the district semi-finals when he scored 24 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked 12 shots in a 58-46 win.

“Kevin can score in a number of ways,” said Williams. “He can face up and shoot, and also score with his back to the basket. He runs like a deer so he’s really going to help us in the transition game, which is an important part of our offense.”

Ndahiro was lightly recruited in the fall after sitting out his junior year as an international transfer student. But he began receiving significant interest from high majors this spring and took a recruiting visit to Washington before verbally committing to the Hatters.

“Back in January, (assistant coach) Bert Capel kept telling me about a big man in Kentucky I needed to go see,” said Williams. “So when we played at North Kentucky I went to watch Kevin practice and I liked what I saw. I loved him almost immediately.

“He was recruited late this spring by a lot of high majors but we continued to build our relationship with him. In the end, we recruited him longer and harder than any other school. We’re very fortunate and very pleased to be able to add Kevin to our program.”

Ndahiro will be the fifth Canadian to play basketball for Stetson, and the first since Shawn Bowen (2007-10) and Olivier Dupiton (2007-10), both of whom hailed from Montreal.
