Brandt, Morello Earn All-Atlantic Sun Honors
DeLand, Fla. - The Atlantic Sun Conference released its postseason softball awards Tuesday afternoon with two Stetson Hatters among the honored. Sophomore center fielder Chrissy Morello (Ormond Beach, Fla.) made her second consecutive All-Atlantic Sun Second Team while freshman pitcher Courtney Brandt (Dade City, Fla.) was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team.
Morello batted .307 with three doubles, two RBI and 20 stolen bases in 42 starts in center field for the Hatters in the 2012 regular season. In 18 conference games, she raised that average to .328, doubling twice in league games and leading the Atlantic Sun with eight stolen bases in eight attempts. Her 20 overall steals rank her fourth in the league and give her 48 for her career, good for a tie for eighth place in Stetson history.
Brandt has proved to be a dual threat for the Hatters as a rookie, batting .283 with eight home runs, six doubles and 24 RBI out of the cleanup spot in the lineup while also pitching to a 2.31 ERA with 10 wins and 95 strikeouts in 121 innings. Five of Brandt's eight homers have come in just 18 conference games as well as half her RBI. This is the second straight season a Hatter has earned All-Freshman recognition following Morello in 2011.
A-Sun superlative awards for 2012 went to Kennesaw State pitcher/third baseman Jessica Cross (Player of the Year), FGCU pitcher Shelby Morgan (Pitcher of the Year), USC Upstate outfielder Shellie Robinson (Freshman of the Year) and Kennesaw State head coach Scott Whitlock (Coach of the Year).
Stetson completed the regular season 24-20 overall and 9-9 in Atlantic Sun Conference, capturing the #6 seed in this week's A-Sun tournament after an uncharacteristic one-year absence. The Hatters face the tournament host, third-seeded USC Upstate, at 5:30 pm Wednesday at Cyrill Softball Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.
