Fourth Quarter Run Lifts Hatters Past Richmond 72-67

McKenna Beach scores a career-high 22 points

DeLand, Fla. -- McKenna Beach scored a career-high 22 points as Stetson opened the Hatter Classic with a 72-67 victory over Richmond Wednesday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

Trailing 50-49 after three quarters, the Hatters (7-6) took off in the fourth, using a 17-3 run to break the game open.

"Overall, I thought we played a good game," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I don't think in the first half too much went our way.  I am really proud of our effort in the second half.  Offensively we moved the ball much better than we did in the first half."

With the victory, the Hatters improved to 5-1 at home this season.  Richmond fell to 5-7.

Beach added four rebounds and four assists to her 22 points while playing a full 40 minutes.

"I thought McKenna Beach had one of the best games of her career," Bria said.  "I thought she carried us the entire game."

Kennedi Colclough scored 17 points before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.  Brittney Chambers added 11 points and Megan Vincent recorded eight points and three blocks.  Kendall Lentz scored a season-high seven off the bench.

"I definitely think our offense was a lot better (in the second half)", Lentz said. "We were able to push the tempo and run out on them."

Stetson also hit 24 free throws in the game.  Beach was 8-for-8 from the line, Colclough was 5-for-5 and Vincent was 4-for-4.

In the second game of the day, Bethune-Cookman (7-3) defeated Texas State (7-3) 62-56.

The Hatter Classic continues Thursday as Stetson hosts Texas State at 1 p.m.

Notes: Lynn Bria tied the program record with her 184th coaching victory with the Hatters. She will go for the record Thursday ... The game featured 13 lead changes including eight in the third quarter alone ... Stetson scored 15 second chance points and 10 fastbreak points ... Brittney Chambers extended her double-figure scoring streak to 19 games.
