Bethune-Cookman sophomore Nolan Santos threw eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits, in blanking Stetson 4-0 Saturday night at Melching Field.
The Wildcats (3-6) scored the only run they needed in the first inning off Stetson starter Jonathan Gonzalez (1-2), thanks to a pair of singles and a double-steal.
The Hatters only managed to get a runner as far as third base twice in the game and finished with just three hits.
Santos posted 11 strikeouts and closer Brenton Fisher picked up two more in the ninth to close out the game.
Gonzalez was sharp himself, working 6.1 innings with a career-high nine strikeouts. He surrendered a pair of walks in the seventh that came home on a double to give the Wildcats some insurance. Junior Danny Garcia, who has been the Friday starter for Stetson, came on from the pen in the eighth inning to pitch two scoreless frames. Garcia is working to regain his strength after have a stomach bug during the week.
Kyle Ball had the only hard-hit ball of the game for Stetson on a two-out double in the fifth. Nick DiPonzio and Cameron Hill had the other two hits for the Hatters.
Stetson will try to get back in the win column on Sunday when the Hatters square off against Sacred Heart. That game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, or approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the 11 a.m. game between the Pioneers and Cookman.
