DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson Hatters endured an afternoon loss against the Fairfield Stags, Friday at Patricia Wilson Field. The game started out slow for both teams. The Stags didn't secure their runs until the third inning when Haley Undergraff and Kaitlin Hoffman brought it home. Even though the Hatters were unsuccessful in getting a result in the first game, a lot of positives came from Coach Shellie Robinson. "I think the first game, we were right there", Robinson said. "We left a lot of runners on which was something that we talked about after the game."
Stetson outhit Fairfield 9-5. Senior
Lauren Klein pitched a complete game in the circle, allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out six. Offensively, senior
Brianna Clary and junior Gianna Neimeier each had three hits, and senior
Alyssa Gilman added two hits to the total.
For the second matchup of the afternoon, Stetson faced off against the Mercer Bears. SU was ready for a busy afternoon, and sophomores
Kami Eppley and
Jaela Haynes were able to capitalize for the Hatters in the sixth and seventh innings. The game was tied 1-1 in the fifth, and Gianna Neimeier came up strong with a two run RBI single to give Stetson the lead. In the sixth inning, Alyssa Gillman also hit a two out RBI single to put the Hatters ahead 3-1.
"We definitely pushed through", Robinson added. "We had a great pitching day from both Lauren's, so I think we're right on the cusp of something good. I thought they attacked and mixed well- they left everybody really off-balanced, so that's always good and we're not worried about being strikeout pitchers, so it's good to know you can play and that your defense will have your back."
Stetson will continue in the Hatter Classic when they play Fairfield again on Saturday, February 18 at Patricia Wilson Field.
