Stetson posts its sixth walk-off victory of the season

DeLand, Fla. - Freshman pitcher Hannah Marien fired a one-hit shutout and Stetson added another walk-off win to its tally with a 1-0 victory over Presbyterian Sunday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

Haley Fox scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Hatters (11-5) won for the eighth time in their last nine games.

The contest featured just two total hits - one for each side - as Marien and Jenna Greene battled each other pitch-for-pitch.

"Obviously both pitchers did really well keeping the offenses at bay," Stetson head coach Shellie Robinson said.  "Hannah did a great job making some adjustments and keeping them off-balance.  On our side of things, (Greene) had our number, and that's how it is going to be some days. We got a big walk there in the seventh. We got our bunt down, which is something we did not do yesterday, and that was the difference right there."

Fox, who led off the bottom of the seventh as a pinch-hitter, worked a full count and fouled off a pitch before drawing a base on balls.

"Huge at bat for her, seeing the ball down and not chasing the up pitch," Robinson said.

Fox then stole second before Briana Robinson laid down a perfect bunt up the first base line.  Prebyterian's throw to first was wild allowing Fox to sprint home with the winning run.

It was Stetson's sixth walk-off victory of the season.

Marien (4-1) earned her first career shutout, allowing only one hit - a fifth inning single - while striking out six and walking two.  Greene walked four and struck out five for the Blue Hose (13-2).

With the victory, the Hatters closed the book on a stretch of 15 of 16 games at home to start the season.  Stetson will take to the road over the next two weeks with nine of the next 10 coming away from DeLand.

"Once you start ASUN play, you are not always going to be at home, so this is going to help prepare us," Robinson said.  "We have a pretty challenging week coming up: two SEC teams plus Samford and Ball State, which are really good programs.  I will be happy if we compete every game, we make adjustments, and the pitchers do their jobs.  It's really the same mental approach no matter where we are. Let's attack and compete, and do things with intent."

Stetson will visit South Carolina at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a game broadcast by SEC+.  The Hatters will then head to Athens, Ga., next weekend for the Bulldog Classic, hosted by the University of Georgia.
