Hatters Fall To #8 Florida 4-1

Evette Morgan goes deep for Stetson

DeLand, Fla. -- A Patricia Wilson Field overflow crowd was treated to a well-pitched, well-played game between #8 Florida and Stetson Wednesday evening in DeLand.  The Gators broke a scoreless tie with two in the fifth and added two in the sixth before holding on for a 4-1 win in the first game of a home-and-home series between the clubs.

Evette Morgan spoiled Florida's no-hit and shutout bid with one swing in the bottom of the seventh.  With none on and two outs, the Hatter junior drove one deep to leftcenter and out for her second home run of the season.

Despite collecting just the one hit in the game, Stetson head coach Shellie Robinson was pleased her team's approach.

"It doesn't necessarily show on the scoreboard, but I thought we hit the ball hard," Robinson said.  "We had one hit, but it was a big one in the bottom of the seventh.  I think going into the weekend, offensively we should feel good. I feel like this is the best we've looked all season."

Stetson starter Hannah Marien (7-5) kept the nation's fourth-ranked scoring offense off the board for the first 4.2 innings.  The Gators finally broke through in the fifth with a single and back-to-back doubles with two outs.  Marien went 5.1 innings before giving way to Lauren Klein, who pitched 1.2 hitless innings of relief.  Florida came in averaging more than eight runs-per-game.

Lexie Delbrey (5-2) went the distance for the Gators, allowing no walks and one hit while striking out two.

After victories over South Carolina and Georgia, Stetson dropped its first game to an SEC opponent this season. The two teams will meet again next Wednesday in Gainesville.

First, the Hatters will head to Jacksonville, Fla. this weekend for a three-game ASUN Conference series against the UNF Ospreys.  The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single gamne at 1 p.m. Sunday.  All three games can be seen on UNFOspreys.com.
