Hatters Drop a Pair to Liberty to Open Series

Flames take Game 2 in Extras

Lynchburg, Va. -- Stetson dropped a pair of ASUN Conference games at Liberty Saturday afternoon, falling 7-0 and 6-5 in nine innings at Liberty Softball Stadium. The Hatters fell to 22-22 overall and 6-8 in league play.

The Flames (28-14, 12-2 ASUN) entered the weekend tied for second place in the ASUN standings and 36th in the NCAA RPI.  Karlie Keeney tossed a 3-hit shutout for Liberty in the opener.

Game 2 was a tightly-contested, seesaw affair that featured a stretch of five straight runs for the Hatters.  After Liberty took an early 3-0 lead, the Hatters got two back in the third. Brianna Clary and Alyssa Gilman drew back-to-back walks and both scored on Evette Morgan's two-out single to right.

Then in the fifth, Kami Eppley led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch which included a nifty slide around the third baseman's tag. She would later score on an infield grounder off the bat of Morgan to tie the game 3-3.  Then with two on and two outs, Annabella McClerren delivered a two-run single to center to give the Hatters a 5-3 lead.

Liberty, however, would get those two runs right back in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 5-5.

The Flames put a pair of runners on in the sixth and seventh innings, but each time Hannah Marien was able to escape the jam to send the game to extras.

Both teams threatened to score in the eighth. In the top half of the frame, Gia Napoli reached on an error, then moved to second when Marissa Baxter beat out a bunt single.  Juls Schumacher advanced the runners on a ground out, but the Flames retired the next two batters to keep the score tied.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Flames put runners on first and second with one out.  KK Madrey's sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, but Marien retired Devyn Howard on a fly out to left to send the game to the ninth.

The Hatters got a one-out single from Morgan in the top of the ninth but nothing more.  In the bottom of the ninth, Rachel Craine and Megan Fortner hit back-to-back doubles with two outs to win it for Liberty.

Marien went the distance for Stetson, battling her way through 8.2 innings and throwing just shy of 150 pitches.

The teams will play the finale of their 3-game series at 10 a.m. Sunday.
