Hatters Split on Friday with ASUN Leader Jacksonville State

Stetson Takes Game 2 6-0

DeLand, Fla. -- Evette Morgan hit a two-run home run and Lauren Hobbs notched her second consecutive shutout as Stetson defeated Jacksonville State 6-0 in game 2 Friday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.  The Gamecocks took the opener 7-3 as the teams split their ASUN Conference doubleheader. Saturday's rubber game will start at 1 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN+.

Jacksonville State (24-10, 10-1 ASUN) entered the day 9-0 and alone in first place in the league standings.  JSU hit three home runs in the opener and led 7-0 before Stetson (21-18, 5-6 ASUN) scored three in the bottom of the seventh.

"I thought we had a great rally in the seventh inning, but we need to make adjustments sooner to give ourselves a chance," Stetson head coach Shellie Robinson said.  "Our hitters came out hot in the second game. They made adjustments early and saw it pay off.  Our energy was great all day."

The Hatters collected eight hits in Game 2, including a third-inning, two-run home run by Morgan that gave Stetson a 4-0 lead.  It was Morgan's third home run of the season as she raised her ASUN OPS to 1.012.

"She's had a different mindset of late," Robinson said.  "She knows she can hit, and I think she's starting to see it.  She's got a good mindset of they're not going to get it by me."

The Hatters added two more runs in the fourth to spot Hobbs a 6-0 lead. The junior left-hander made it stand, allowing four hits and no runs while striking out two.  She threw just 69 pitches en route to her third shutout of the season.

"That's a great hitting team, so for Lauren to keep them to zero runs is huge for her and huge for the defense to make some plays behind her," Robinson said.  "It was a big team effort for both games today."

Stetson's defense came up with some big plays in game 2 as catcher Jordyn Stanfill made a running catch in foul territory just before reaching the backstop netting.  Stetson also turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the top of the sixth.

Offensively, the top four hitters in the line-up combined for 12 hits on the day.  Brianna Clary had four knocks, Alyssa Gilman and Morgan had three each, and Gianna Niemeier had two. Morgan led the way with three RBI, while Gia Napoli and Niemeier drove in two runs each.

Notes: Stetson posted its ninth shutout of the season ... The Hatters have snapped four winning streaks this season of 12 or more games (Presbyterian-12, South Carolina-14, USC Upstate-22 at home, Jacksonville State-13) ... JSU head coach Jama McGinnis was ejected in the third inning of game 2 ... Evette Morgan set the single-season school record for most HBP (17). SHe now leads the NCAA in that category.
