Pete Simpson, a Stetson University graduate, joined the Hatters athletics program as head cheerleading coach in spring of 2025.
Simpson embodies the spirit of resilience and passion, qualities that have guided him from his birthplace in Puerto Rico to his current role in Central Florida. His journey began with a childhood love for gymnastics, a sport that allowed him to defy gravity and experience the thrill of movement. This early passion for athleticism laid the foundation for his future endeavors.
He later transitioned to cheerleading in high school, drawn by the opportunity to merge his love of performing and gymnastics. Today, as a coach, he finds immense joy in the ability of cheerleading to bring happiness wherever it goes.
"My favorite thing about Stetson Cheerleading is the unique opportunity to rebrand the program," he shared. "It is incredibly rewarding to coach athletes who are eager to learn, grow, and share their school pride and spirit."
A legacy of support
Simpson's journey wouldn't have been possible without the unwavering support of his parents, Harry and Jocelyne Simpson. As the eldest of three siblings, he had a front-row seat to their remarkable sacrifices and dedication.
His parents sold their company and relocated to mainland USA, despite not speaking English or having jobs lined up, all to provide their children with the resources they needed to succeed.
"My parents are the most driven, selfless, and disciplined individuals I know," he said. "Tough act to follow, but I sure am proud to call them mine."
Their influence remains a guiding force in his life, shaping his values and work ethic.
The artistic touch
Beyond his athletic pursuits, Simpson possesses a hidden talent in the world of artistry. Having worked as a make-up artist, he has seen his creations featured in niche fashion magazines and web editorials. This artistic side adds a unique dimension to his coaching approach, allowing him to connect with athletes on a creative level.
A communications major as an undergraduate at Stetson, Simpson aspires to use his skills to assist young talent in navigating the complex entertainment industry. His goal is to empower and guide aspiring artists, sharing the knowledge he has gained throughout his diverse experiences.
Leaving a mark
Simpson's professional journey at Stetson began as a consultant before he took the helm of the Hatters cheerleading program. Under his leadership, the team made program history at the Universal Cheerleaders Association College Nationals, a testament to his dedication and vision.
Looking to the future, Simpson envisions a continued rebranding of the Stetson Cheerleading program, working with athletes who are eager to learn, grow, and share their school pride and spirit.
As he reflects on his journey, Simpson shares his aspiration for the future, "I would like to be remembered as someone who cared deeply and did their best to leave places and people better than I found them."
Simpson's story is not just about his accomplishments, but also about the impact he aims to have on those around him. Whether through coaching, artistry, or mentorship, he strives to make a positive difference in the lives he touches.
