Marien Fires No-Hitter as Hatters Shutout Queens

Freshman right-hander posts first career no-no

DeLand, Fla. -- Freshman pitcher Hannah Marien tossed her first collegiate no-hitter as Stetson blanked Queens 1-0 Saturday morning at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters (17-12, 1-2 ASUN) bounced back to win the finale of the three-game ASUN Conference series after the Royals (10-10, 2-1) took both games on Friday.

Marien was brilliant from start to finish, allowing just two batters to reach base while recording her third shutout of the season.  She walked one and struck out six, and threw 70 percent of her pitches for strikes.

"Hannah did a great job," Stetson head coach Shellie Robinson said. "I think she has really found her stride. She threw another great game yesterday, a game she probably should have won."

"I felt calm and relaxed," Marien said.  "I pitched pretty well yesterday but still gave up a few hits, so I just went out today with the mindset of shutting them down."

Marien (7-4) was backed by a strong defensive effort, including a stab by rightfielder Alyssa Gilman on a hard line drive in the sixth inning.

"That one scared me a little bit off the bat, but I was glad Alyssa was able to get it," Marien said.

Third baseman Gia Napoli also made a nice play on a bunt in the seventh to help preserve Stetson's first no-no since 2015.

Offensively, it took the Hatters just two batters and five pitches to score the first run of the game.  Brianna Clary led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a double to leftcenter by Marissa Baxter.  However, that would be all they would get against Royals' starter Autumn Courtney, who allowed just the two hits and struck out six over five innings of work.

It was Stetson's fourth 1-0 victory of the season.

Overall, the Hatters scored just four runs in the 3-game series.

"I think with our offense, we have to decide that we want to compete," Robinson said.  "Once we trust in our abilities and have confidence in ourselves like I have confidence in them, we can be unstoppable. I think we are on the right track for that to happen. We have a big game this Wednesday and then another conference series, so hopefully they can come and be warriors and compete."

Stetson will host the 8th-ranked Florida Gators at 6 p.m. Wednesday in game broadcast on ESPN+. The Hatters will play a 3-game series at UNF next weekend.

Notes: Stetson's last no-hitter was pitched by Courtney Brandt vs. Morgan State on Feb. 21, 2015.  Brandt also hit a grand slam in that game ... The Hatters have played five 1-0 games this season (4-1) ... Clary was 4-for-7 in the series and raised her season average to .402 ... Marien has a 0.52 ERA in the month of March.
