Hatters Split a Pair of Extra Inning Games on Saturday

Lauren Hobbs picks up her third win of the week

Athens, Ga. -- The Hatters played a total of 18 innings of softball Saturday and split a pair of games on day 2 of the UGA Bulldog Classic at Turner Softball Stadium.

In the opener, Lauren Hobbs (7-1) tossed another gem in the circle as Stetson defeated Samford 1-0 in eight innings.  The Hatters turned right around and played another extra-inning game, this time falling 6-5 to Ball State in a 10-inning, seesaw affair.

Game 1 saw Hobbs and Samford's McKenzie Newcomb lock up in a pitcher's duel as neither team could scratch across a run through the first seven innings of play.

Stetson, playing as the visiting team, started the top of the eighth with Alyssa Gilman on second base. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Annabella McClerren and scored on a successful squeeze bunt by Jaela Haynes.

In the bottom of the eighth, Samford (6-12) also got its free runner to third with only one out.  The Bulldogs then attempted to tag on a fly out to center field, but McClerren delivered a strike to home plate to record the final out of the game.

Following Friday night's game-ending 4-6-3 twin killing to secure a 2-1 win over #16 Georgia, it was Stetson's second straight defensive "walk-off" double play.

Hobbs tossed a five-hit shutout to pick up her third win of the week and her seventh win of the season.  She struck out a season-high nine batters and worked out of multiple jams throughout the game to preserve the shutout. Overall, Samford was 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

The game against Ball State (7-6) featured five ties and plenty of late game drama as the teams battled back and forth through 10 innings of play.  With the international tiebreak in effect, each team scored once in the eighth and once in the ninth before the Cardinals plated the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.

Stetson trailed 2-1 in the top of the fifth when Haley Fox and McClerren each delivered RBI singles to give Stetson a 3-2 lead.

Ball State pulled even in the bottom of the sixth, but Hannah Marien left the bags loaded to keep the game knotted at 3.

The Cardinals nearly won the game in the bottom of the seventh when McKayla Timmons tripled to right field with a runner on, but a perfect relay throw to plate by Kami Eppley sent the game to extra innings.

An RBI grounder by Briana Robinson gave Stetson a 4-3 lead in the eighth, and an RBI double by Gilman put Stetson ahead 5-4 in the ninth, but each time the Cardinals came back to tie in their half of the inning.  Ball State notched the winning tally in the 10th, snapping Stetson's run of four straight 1-run victories.

The two teams will meet again at 10:30 a.m. Sunday to close the Bulldog Classic.
