Hall of Fame
Often cited as one of the most talented athletes to ever attend Stetson, golf champion Grace Lenczyk was inducted into the Stetson Athletics Hall of Fame in 1980. As an amateur golfer, Lenczyk twice captured the Canadian Women’s Open (1947, 1948) and was the medalist at the 1947 All-American Open as a professional. Perhaps her most impressive feat came in 1948 when she won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. Lenczyk also won the U.S. Intercollegiate Championship and was named to the Curtis Cup in 1948. She continued competing during her four years at Stetson, gaining more notoriety for defeating the legendary “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias in the very first U.S. Women’s Open in 1946. A native of Newington, Conn., Lenczyk also competed in the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship, and in 1948 she finished in the top 10 at both the Titleholders Championship (8th) and U.S. Open (t-4th).
