Herb Dudley may be the finest pitcher in American fastpitch softball history. Dudley, who attended Stetson from 1946-50, won more than 1,000 games in his fastpitch career, a career which spanned from 1940 through 1981. He gained national fame in 1949 when he struck out 55 batters in a 21-inning game while pitching for the Clearwater Bombers at the World Softball Tournament. Dudley owned a 28-9 record in 16 Amateur Softball Association national championship appearances. He was a five-time ASA All-American and a two-time ASA Championship MVP. He also hurled an estimated 100 no-hitters during his fast-pitch softball career. Dudley played for several teams throughout his career including the Clearwater Bombers. The Herb Dudley Outstanding Pitching Award is given annually to the ASA national tournament’s most outstanding pitcher. In addition to playing softball, Dudley taught at Clearwater High School for 30 years. Dudley, who is a member of both the Florida Sports Hall of Fame and the ASA Hall of Fame, was inducted into the Stetson Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981.
