Nicholson is originally from Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. He was drafted by the California Angels in 1994, but chose to attend Stetson instead. In 1997, he was named Conference Player of the Year. After graduating. Nicholson was drafted in the first round, 27^th overall, by the San Diego Padres. He also competed for the Canadian National team and made appearances in the Olympics and the Baseball World Cup.
